Chapter Twenty-Five

Thailand

There were a few young women that came each weekend to visit the girls in the Deliverance home. These women were among the first group of slaves to be rescued and restored under the guidance of Deliverance. They had jobs and were hardworking, productive members of Thai society. Some worked in the Deliverance Café, others in hair salons, and others still were seamstresses that sold their wares in the market.

All belonged to the Lord. They loved to spend one day a week loving on girls that had come out of the same situations as they had. A small worship service was held in the gathering room, a short Bible study and then one on one time, the older women encouraging and teaching the younger rescues.

Nataya usually looked forward to the day the restored women came. As kind as their dorm mother was, as understanding as their counselors and teachers were, no one empathized as the mentors did who came to visit each weekend. There was a sacred and beautiful understanding between them.

But that morning Nataya kept to herself, tucked into the corner of the couch, hunkered down around her belly in confusion and fear.

Anong, a plain, petite woman that worked in the café and was studying to be a nurse, sat next to Nataya when the music was over. The rest of the group broke off to play games or practice make-up application with their older friends.

At first, Anong sat silently beside Nataya, who stared ahead, hand resting on her slightly extended abdomen. Anong had been rescued around the same age, and after ten years in the program, she had hope unlike anything she’d dared to dream of. The horror of the first sixteen years of life was something she would never completely erase, but her nightmares had waned, and her confidence and assurance grew more each day. Christ had made her new, and she was forever grateful. As a result, Anong longed to help other girls come to the same life-altering place of confidence in God and His power.

She knocked a knuckle lightly on Nataya’s knee. “Want to talk about it, young friend?” she asked, watching Nataya’s face for the answer.

Nataya shrugged, her eyes desperate to talk, her mouth clenched as if she were afraid it would speak of its own volition.

Anong understood fear and uncertainty. Where Nataya had embraced healing quickly, Anong had held back for years, too afraid to speak or to hope. When she did speak, it was in angry and accusatory tones. After the tricks and abuse of sixteen years, she couldn’t help but test the motives of those around her. How would they benefit from her rescue? What would they take away from her schooling or training? It took many nights of screaming until her voice was hoarse, many loving responses to her hatred, and weeks of patience in light of her taxing behavior, for Anong to finally break down and accept that the love they expressed day after day after day was sincere.
